Summary
I am an experienced Arts Educator. I have worked with various age groups and abilities.
I teach African-Caribbean dances accompanied by recorded music such as drums or soca rhythms and live African drums. These dances are traditional forms which have some European influence and a strong African influence. An example of such dances are the calypso,Bele,Bongo, pique,Jahroo etc. I also teach creative African- Caribbean Dances which tell stories of Caribbean culture or can be fused with stories from other cultures or integrated with a curriculum context to reinforce or introduce concepts or issues.
I perform, interactive African-Caribbean storytelling with songs and movement accompanied by live African drumming.
My storytelling/ drama workshops consist of adaptations of stories, African- Caribbean Dance movements, songs and rhythms. They are fused to bring texts, issues or concepts alive in an educational atmosphere.
From experience this creative approach enables the awareness and development of the self, convergent and divergent thinking skills, indepth knowledge of issues, concepts etc. It also facilitates awareness and appreciation of the Afro- Caribbean culture. It accomodates participants diverse learning styles thus creating a creative and fun atmosphere for learning.
