Summary

As a freelance Workshop Facilitator I develop and run innovative ‘Arts in Education’ workshops looking at social issues using drama, video and role-play. I provide opportunities for young people and adults to explore creative approaches to issues in their lives.

The workshops use alternative ways of learning to give the groups I work with a voice on subjects they want to address but lack the confidence to discuss in mainstream settings. Creating a space where they can talk honestly; expressing their opinions, whilst also showing how the choices they make will shape their futures. I also facilitate fun, non-issue based projects for youth centres, after schools clubs and play schemes.

My workshop style was born out of realizing the need for flexibility when working with ‘hard-to-reach’ groups. Cultural and social knowledge combined with, when relevant, focused research, allows me to create workshops that maximize accessibility for any age group or cultural mix. I am used to dealing with challenging behaviour and I have done a lot of work in PRU’s with young people exclude from mainstream education. I have also worked in prisons and with people with special learning needs. Often the groups that would be considered ‘under-achievers’, excel, contribute and blossom in the freedom of the non-academic setting of the workshops.

I have worked with groups on a range of issues including; Bullying, Gun Crime, Self-esteem, Crime, Drugs, Sexuality, Rights, Sexual Health, emotional aspects of Sex and Relationships, Race, Prejudice and Identity, Communication, Friendship.
