Terry has just asked if I would be a referee for him for your Artscape directory, which I am very happy to do. Saying good, positive things about Terry will be the easiest and most enjoyable task I have to do at my desk today!

Terry has worked with us here in Wakefield on many occasions over the past eight years or so. He has worked with our public library colleagues, looked after children and worked with children of all ages at library/book events.

We, here at the SLS, have asked Terry to be part of many, varied projects eg a local history/poetry initiative which was a collaborative project involving all the schools in Castleford, the Yorkshire Arts Circus, the Friends of the Castleford Library and the Heritage Forum; He has facilitated and led a series of workshops encouraging and engaging Year 9 boys to read; Terry has addressed our termly teachers book review panel and has been into many of our schools for writing/poetry performance workshops, sometimes one-off sessions and sometimes a series of events over a week or number of weeks.

I think Terry's strengths are with older children but he can inspire and hold children as young as 7/8 years old. He always makes an impact and can get even the most reluctant pupil to respond and participate. His relaxed, humourous style can "hide" the very serious passion and commitment he has to books, reading, words, music and writing but he always communicates this love and excitement to his audience, whatever their age. The SLS team regularly give Terry's contact details to schools when they request an author, poet etc to attend bookweeks and such events.

Terry can be relied on and is always open to ideas and different approaches depending on the project and the audience; He never turns up with a ready, one-fit only package but will discuss the project beforehand and tailor what he does to its needs. He is one of the easiest artists I have worked with but, also, one of the most stimulating, the most interesting, the most dedicated and the funniest I have met.

Terry Caffrey has worked with the South Sefton EiC Action Zone since 2004 on a variety of programmes and initiatives involving children from nursery age through to KS4. These programmes have been highly innovative and have involved Teachers and support staff working alongside Terry to ensure planning met learning objectives.

Terry has also facilitated whole school InSET and a number of parent workshops. These have been highly successful.

The Zone continues to work well with Terry on extending the role of writers/poets in schools.
